Ebel Classic Hexagon GMT

| From Arnon Milchan, September/October 2008

When a watch company promotes itself as "The Architects of Time," it is a brave, if not arrogant, gesture. But for Ebel, a Swiss-based watch company founded in 1911, it's merely a reflection of its confidence and ability, innovation and focus, and respected history in the world of horology. Of course, such sentiment must be backed up with quality timepieces and Ebel's Classic Hexagon GMT does that.

In every sense, the Classic Hexagon GMT is a power watch in a world of power suits, power ties and power plays. It is a businessman's watch with an oversized, 45.5mm face built to show your confident, sophisticated side, and a curved, hexagonal case designed for balance and comfort. Yes, it's simple, and slightly understated, but its guilloché engraving and pared-down design produces a refined style that will make you stand apart from your peers. For Ebel, it's a watch that allows the company to stand apart from other watch manufacturers.

A reinterpretation of Ebel's original Sport Classic, which was released in 1977 and has since become the company's signature watch, the Classic Hexagon's main feature is its Swiss automatic movement with a specialized GMT complication. Along with a main dial that displays local time and a date window, the Classic Hexagon has a sub-dial at 6 o'clock that keeps the time in another time zone—a practical feature for the international businessman jumping from time zone to time zone. The dials and the beveled hour markers provide a visually striking modern appearance, which is rounded out by a hand-sewn alligator strap.

According to Ebel, the Classic Hexagon GMT will be the focus of its U.S. marketing campaign as an example of not only what Ebel has done in the past, but also what it intends to gravitate towards in the future. The Ebel Classic Hexagon GMT is available in stainless steel ($4,950) and 18-karat rose gold (pictured, $15,900). Visit www.ebel.com.
