Handmade Cigar Imports Through May Keeping Pace With 2023

The demand for handmade cigars shows no signs of cooling off. The United States imported 154.6 million , handmade cigars for the first five months of the year, nearly even with the 154.9 million imported in the first five months of 2023.
This cigar boom, which began four years ago, isn’t going away just yet.
Nicaragua, the leading producer of handmade cigars for the United States, had a 3 percent gain in shipments, at 98.4 million cigars, compared to 95.5 million for the first five months of 2023. The Dominican Republic was down 5.6 percent, to 29.9 million, followed very closely by Honduras at 24.9 million cigars, an 8.3 percent decline from 2023.
More than 467 million handmade, cigars were shipped to the United States in 2023, roughly the same as were shipped in 2022. The old measuring stick for a good year in the cigar business was one where imports hit 300 million. For the past three years, the 400 million mark was hit or exceeded, and if current trends continue, it will happen again this year.
