The Big Smoke Returns To Las Vegas—Tickets On Sale Now

In a momentous year for Jeep—major updates to familiar models like the Grand Cherokee—the biggest news is the launch of two battery-electric vehicles (BEV). Jeep isn’t entirely new to the electrified vehicle market. Wagoneer S, now rolling into American showrooms, is Jeep’s first global EV, soon to be followed by the Recon later this year.

While Jeep already sells the little Avenger in Europe (and its Wrangler 4xe is its best-selling plug-in hybrid in the United States), coming up with the right product was a huge challenge for Jeep. “It isn’t about delivering a battery-electric vehicle,” says engineering chief David Partlow, “but a Jeep BEV.”

The design is immediately familiar, starting with the iconic Jeep seven-slat grille—albeit sealed to improve range-extending aerodynamics. Wagoneer S is smaller than either of the current, gas-powered Wagoneer models. But with batteries and motors mounted below the load floor, it provides two roomy rows and up to 61 cubic feet of cargo space. And it picks up on the lavishly appointed interiors of the existing Wagoneers.

Drawing power from a 100 kWh battery pack, Wagoneer S is one of the most powerful Jeeps ever, pushing a combined 600 hp and 617 lb-ft. of torque to all four wheels. It can race from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds or yield less aggressive drivers an EPA-estimated 303-mile range. Plug into a 200-kW public charger and you’ll go from a 10 to 80 percent charge in as little as 23 minutes.

The Selec-Terrain traction management system features five distinct drive modes—auto, sport, eco, snow, and sand—on a toggle switch on the center console. In current form, Wagoneer S is more of a soft-roader than the brand’s rugged image might suggest. To maximize aerodynamics—and range—it has only 6.4 inches of ground clearance and a fixed steel suspension.

For those seeking more serious off-road chops, Jeep may soon roll out a production version of the Wagoneer S Trackhawk concept revealed in May 2024. And it launches the Recon later this year, an all-electric alternative to the go-anywhere Jeep Wrangler. For most buyers, however, Wagoneer S delivers more than enough capabilities for day-to-day driving and the occasional trip to the cabin. Pricing starts at $71,995 plus delivery fees—and includes a choice of a home Level 2 240-volt charger or $600 in credits to use at public chargers.
