Neoteric HoverGolf Cart

| By Andy Garcia, March/April 2014
Neoteric HoverGolf Cart

The most impressive feature of the Neoteric HoverGolf Cart is not that it can reach speeds of 45 miles per hour, or that, unlike other hovercraft, it’s capable of braking and traveling in reverse. No, what’s remarkable about the HoverGolf Cart, conceived by the tour player Bubba Watson, is that a golfer with a maverick’s spirit can flout cart rules and traverse fairways, water hazards, sand traps and even greens—without damaging the carefully manicured environment.

The secret to the HoverGolf Cart’s environmental friendliness lies not in its fairly light weight (600 pounds, thanks to a composite fiberglass and urethane foam hull), but the negligible footprint pressure that the air-cushion vehicle applies to the playing surface. Whereas a walking human exerts about 25 pounds per square inch on the ground, the HoverGolf Cart applies only three pounds per square inch, or about one-thirtieth that of a human foot.

The HoverGolf Cart sports a 65-horsepower, twin-cylinder Hirth engine that sucks in air to provide thrust and fill the machine’s skirt for the four-enger cabin to glide across the golf course at about nine inches off the ground. The HoverGolf Neoteric’s patented HoverTrek technology not only greatly improves maneuverability, but also allows the machine to brake, park and reverse at speeds up to 25 miles per hour.

Motorcycle-style handlebars control a system of rudders near the fan, which runs at 85 decibels, or about the equivalent of city traffic noise inside a car. Steering the HoverGolf Cart can be a bit tricky since you are not driving, but technically flying. To ease first-time buyers into the experience, Neoteric offers a complimentary, daylong training course that covers the principles and preventative maintenance of hovercraft. (For an additional fee, Neoteric will even come to you.) Course graduates also receive a lifetime warranty on their HoverGolf Cart.

Each HoverGolf Cart ($58,000) is hand-built in the Indiana factory of Neoteric Hovercraft Inc. The company was founded in 1960, and is now considered the world’s preeminent manufacturer of light hovercraft. Neoteric constructs hovercraft not only for personal use, but for rescue, military and commercial purposes as well.

Additionally, buyers are free to order a logo or custom paint job to their HoverGolf Cart, again for an additional fee. Might we suggest the phrase “Move it or lose it” in Georgia font?
