Aged H. Upmanns Just For Spain

Having a hard time finding Cuban H. Upmann No. 2 cigars? A trip to Spain might be in order. The country’s Habanos distributor, Tabacalera S.L.U., has gone into its stock of H. Upmann No.2s from 2022 and packaged them in unique boxes made exclusively for its regional market. And the year 2022 is not arbitrary: that’s when Cigar Aficionado named the H. Upmann No. 2 the Cigar of the Year.
Measuring 6 1/8 inches long by 52 ring gauge, the H. Upmann No. 2 shares its dimensions with the better-known Montecristo No. 2, but isn’t produced in nearly the same quantities and is blended to be milder. Naturally, the cigar became more difficult to find once this publication named it No. 1.
Rather than releasing standard dress boxes with a 2022 production stamp on the bottom, Tabacalera was more ceremonious about the presentation. Special 22-count boxes (Upmann No. 2s are normally packed in boxes of 25) were designed for this rollout, made with contoured edges and a glossy, deep-red finish.
Each cigar, which retails for 30 euros apiece (around $31.75), is adorned with a large vintage foot band differentiating them from typical H. Upmann No. 2s, however you pay for the extra age. Regular-production Upmann No. 2s retail in Spain for 20.20 euros (about $21.35), an increase of 48.5 percent. Only 1,000 boxes of the H. Upmann No. 2 Selección 2022 are being released.
