Connoisseur’s Corner: Don Candido Dunhill Selección No. 506 (circa 1960s)

These cigars were discontinued in the 1980s, and decades later, they’re beyond marvelous. This lovely corona gorda blossoms with flavor about half an inch after being lit. Earthy notes on the outset are ed by warm, sweet and rich flavors of marzipan, hazelnut and German chocolate. Gets better with every puff. Astounding. —David Savona
This former Cigar of the Year delivers a near-perfect draw and an even burn right after lighting. Rich and flavorful, it brings caramel and coffee to the table with perhaps a more pronounced herbaceous flavor than expected. A bold cigar upon release, this Behike is balanced, rich, elegant and rewarding. —David Savona
This cigar has come a long way since its debut. It still starts out with the same herbal notes, but now, this little corona really opens up to show the bready, salty qualities of a warm pretzel balanced by sweeter layers of graham cracker, butterscotch and toffee. If you have any of these small smokes laying around, smoke them now. —Gregory Mottola
I bought many of these pre-Castro petit coronas at a New York City auction in 1984. Topped with a slight taper at the head, they are simple, skinny, cigars that perform surprisingly well, with a great draw, perfect burn and tangy, dusty notes along with a touch of honey roasted peanut. A true piece of cigar history. —Marvin R. Shanken
