More than 100 people have appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado: movie and television stars, sports legends, famous people of all types. When we asked our audience to vote on their favorite cover in celebration of our 25th anniversary in December, Sir Winston Churchill won the contest handily. He’s arguably the most important figure from the past 100 years of world history, and one who clearly resonates with our readers.
Inspired by the recent Oscar-winning film, Darkest Hour, we set out to create our most comprehensive look at Churchill ever. First, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham examines the perseverance of Winston Churchill in steadying the British in their finest hour. Then we take a look at the many actors who have donned the bowler hat to affect the persona of Churchill on the silver screen. We also turn to the experts to find out if the stories of Churchill’s almost constant smoking and drinking are truth or mere legend, and take a look at the historic humidor given to Churchill by the nation of Cuba that is now enshrined in the collection of Marvin R. Shanken, editor and publisher of Cigar Aficionado.
Plus, we talk to Pete Bevacqua, the CEO of the Professional Golfers Association of America, take a look inside the new Arturo Fuente cigar factory, and rate 80 cigars in six sizes: Churchill, corona gorda, figurado, grande, petit corona and robusto.
