Aged Romeo Wide Churchills Made Just For Spain
There’s a chance you’ve heard of Juan Belmonte, the famous matador from Seville whose career spanned into the 1930s, especially if you’re from Spain, or studied Spanish culture. Spain’s Cuban cigar distributor Tabacalera S.L.U. has honored this bullfighting icon with a special-edition series of Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills dubbed Tauromaquia y Juan Belmonte.
It’s the third installment of Spain’s Tauromaquia series, which takes aged Cuban cigars from the normal Habanos range of sizes, and puts them in lacquered boxes romantically illustrated with a bullfighter in action. Tauromaquia translates to “bullfighter” in Spanish. This year, an illustration of Belmonte graces a box of Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills that Tabacalera says have been aged for a minimum of five years.
Each box retails for 200 euros (about $240, or $24.40 per cigar). Only 1,000 illustrated 10-count boxes were produced and are made exclusively for the Spanish market.
In 2019, Tabacalera kicked off the Tauromaquia series by putting a sketch of Morante de la Puebla on a box of aged Partagás Serie P No. 2.
