My Father La Promsea comes in five sizes: Robusto Grande, Toro, Lancero, Petite, and Corona Gorda.

My Father Cigars, the company behind Cigar Aficionado’s FDA’s final deeming rule. Now it will have its official, nationwide release next month at the IPR trade show in Las Vegas.

“The brand is going to have a nationwide release at IPR show. We had a small release in early 2016,” Alcides Montenegro, general manager & creative director at My Father Cigars told Cigar Aficionado.

La Promesa is covered in a dark, Ecuador Habano rosado oscuro wrapper, with binder and filler tobaccos from the Garcia family farms in Nicaragua. Packaged in 20-count boxes, the line comes in five sizes: Robusto Grande, at 5 1/2 inches by 54 ring gauge ($8.50); Toro, 6 by 52 ($9.20); Lancero, 7 1/2 by 38 ($10.00); Petite, 4 1/2 by 50 ($7.80); and Corona Gorda, 5 1/2 by 48 ($8.20).

My Father La Promesa

The “promise” in La Promesa refers to a promise that company patriarch José "Pepín" García made to his family before leaving his native country, Cuba, for Nicaragua.

“La Promesa, ‘The Promise,’ is referring to something very personal between Pepín and his family,” Montenegro said. “In 2001 when he left Cuba for the first time, completely alone, he made a promise to the rest of the family, who stayed in Cuba.”

Pepin’s promise was to prove himself, to make something of himself in the cigar industry outside of Cuba, and to honor his family and tobacco heritage. According to My Father, the company as it stands today—with its farms in Nicaragua and factories in both Nicaragua and Miami—is the fulfillment of that promise.

“For us, as immigrants, this is very important, because when one leaves his hometown, a lot of dreams, hopes and promises travel with oneself, especially when the rest of the family isn’t doing that trip with you,” Montenegro said.

My Father La Promesa is made at the My Father Cigars Factory, in Estelí, Nicaragua.
