My Favorite Cigar

Danny DeVito • Actor
Partagás Serie D No. 4
Danny DeVito is a comic legend who built a career using his diminutive stature to create outsized characters with even bigger personalities. The role that launched him from being a TV actor to a media multi-hyphenate—irascible Louie De Palma on TV’s “Taxi”—also led to his appreciation of fine tobacco, via Ed. Weinberger, one of the series’ creators.
DeVito’s favorite cigar is a Partagás Serie D No. 4, and his favorite time to smoke is after a good dinner, by himself, in his backyard. And, of course, being Danny DeVito, he has a famously funny story involving cigars.
On a flight to Europe in the late 1980s—at which point he was already both a TV and film star—DeVito asked the attendant if he was permitted to smoke a cigar. The attendant told him that smoking was against the rules—but allowed that if DeVito could get unanimous approval from the other engers, they would let him light up. So DeVito went from enger to enger and they all agreed—until the last one, who told him he would vote ‘Yes’—if DeVito had a cigar for him as well.
“Luckily,” DeVito said later, “I had an extra.”
