My Favorite Cigar

Matthew McConaughey • Actor/Producer
Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill
Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, who was featured on the cover of Cigar Aficionado in 2011 and 2018, is so busy that it wouldn’t seem he’d have time to light a cigar. But that may be precisely why he does. As he told this magazine, “There’s a ritual about smoking a cigar that slows my clock down. I’m a busy guy—so I like the chance to slow that clock down.” McConaughey, who has been creative director of Wild Turkey since 2016, released his autobiography, Greenlights, in 2020. He spent the better part of 2021 being touted as a possible Texas gubernatorial candidate, before announcing that he wouldn’t run. That’s in addition to his usual full plate as a movie star and producer, writer, philanthropist, college lecturer at the University of Texas-Austin and father of three. And then there’s talk of a miniseries based on his breakout role in the movie version of John Grisham’s A Time to Kill. There’s also a possible sequel to his autobiography. When he does indulge in fine tobacco, his cigars of choice are medium-sized Romeo y Julietas (such as the Wide Churchills), usually on the golf course. Whatever it may be, count on McConaughey to remain true to the credo he’s been following since he started in show business: “Be a gentleman and don’t lie.”
