My Favorite Cigar

Stefan Schauffele • Golf Coach • Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro
Stefan Schauffele, father and mentor to top PGA Tour pro Xander Schauffele, is a longtime cigar smoker, especially when he’s playing golf.
“When I golf it’s Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro,” says Schauffele of his favorite cigar. “It’s the right size, it’s box-pressed, it’s not round and it lies flat and it’s such a consistent product. Very delicious.” He will smoke at least one per nine holes, maybe three for a round when he’s “feeling funny.” He’s also a fan of H. Upmann cigars, which he might smoke for a special occasion. He has a humidor with maybe as many as 200 cigars inside.
As for a spirited accompaniment, he has switched from Cognac to Tequila. “I always liked Louis XIII Cognac but it got too expensive, it’s insane now,” says Schauffele. “So maybe a dozen years ago I switched over to Tequila.”
Schauffele is in a career transition. “I’m headed back to Hawaii after the Masters,” says Schauffele. “Hawaii allows me to be a builder-contractor. I need to be on site. It’s a good time to smoke a cigar when you overlook what they are doing. Not a bad idea.”
