My Favorite Cigar

Sam Heughan • Actor • Partagás Serie D No. 4
Sam Heughan walks into the dining room of New York’s Metropolitan Club wearing a kilt, broadsword in hand, dramatically shouting about slaying the haggis. It’s a great show. The 44-year-old Scottish actor, best known for his starring role in the series “Outlander,” is in his element, a Keepers of the Quaich dinner focused around Scotch whisky. He has his own, called The Sassenach. “I was drinking a lot of Asian blends, I thought they were incredible, really well-balanced,” he says. “I thought Scotland doesn’t really have one like that.” The Sassenach is a blend of three different malts, plus a 19-year-old grain whisky. “You can buy some incredible aged grain whiskeys, they’re just so full of fruit, toffee and caramel—they’re great sippers,” he explains. “You have to be careful with a cigar; the cigar can sometimes dominate them.”
He’s loved cigars for about six years. His go-to is the Partagás Serie D No. 4, but he loves lanceros, and waxes poetic about El Rey del Mundo La Reinas and OpusX Lanceros. He tends to shop at No. 6 Cavendish in London.
He’s in Scotland now filming the eighth and final season of his show. “It’s been almost 11 years now. It’s crazy, the emotions, the memories that keep coming back,” he says. “I think probably the way I’m going to celebrate is with a good cigar.”
